Popular mannequin duo FEMM comprises sentient mannequins RiRi and LuLa. Their first album ‘Femm-Isation’ entered the Top 10 of Billboard’s World Albums Chart and was featured in the Best Indie Albums section at HMV stores across Britain, while their pioneering ’90s-pop-punk-infused track ‘We Got Each Other’ ranked on the influential Mediabase Activator Chart in the United States for 12 consecutive weeks. FEMM have previously declared that they will split up at the end of 2023, the year of their 10th anniversary. Now, FEMM have announced their final EP, ‘CHERRY’, which will be released on November 15.

The lead track is “CHERRY on TOP”, which was selected as the theme song for a rap-battle series Freestyle Nihontouitsu, on TV Asahi. The EP includes production from MYLK, with whom FEMM collaborated on their releases “Plastic” and “80s/90s J-POP REVIVAL”; and Radical Hardcore Clique, who worked with FEMM on “THE SIX” and “ID:T1G3R”. It also includes RiRi and LuLa’s first ever solo songs, “Living in the Spotlight” and “Butterfly to the Moon”.

The lyrics to the lead track and the solo songs were written by the members of FEMM themselves. The EP title ‘CHERRY’ has two meanings: Like the cherry on top of a cake or a parfait, it is a final gift from FEMM to their fans, while it also represents RiRi and LuLa together as one.

“CHERRY on TOP” is a song bursting with feminist power, reminiscent of FEMM’s signature track “Fxxk Boyz Get Money”, which was a smash hit among teens in the United States and Europe. “SUN” is a song about the hope that shines like a ray of light in difficult times. The five songs on the EP are rounded out by FEMM’s first ever solo songs in their 10-year career, ‘Living in the Spotlight’ and “Butterfly to the Moon”, along with “We Flood the Night (MYLK Remix)”, a re-rub of their 2014 track that marked their first meeting with MYLK.

Riri’s solo song “Living in the Spotlight” is about her determination to live life in the spotlight, even if it is a confined space; while LuLa’s song ‘Butterfly to the Moon’ is about moving on while embracing the things that matter most, and is filled with gratitude to FEMM’s fans, known as Agents.

As they deliver this EP as a parting gift to the Agents around the world who have supported them over the years, the members of FEMM gave the following comments.

Comment from RiRi

“I’m sure many of our Agents are surprised to hear that the title of our final EP is ‘CHERRY’. We wanted to be ourselves right until the very end, which is why we have created this final EP. Its production brought a series of challenges, as we were involved in writing the lyrics ourselves and we each created a solo song for the first time, but we made it with the hope that it will reach all of you. This may be our last EP, but never forget that our songs will be with you forever. Thank you so much for these past 10 years!”

Comment from LuLa

“As a surprise gift to the Agents who have shown us so much love, we made this EP with all our hearts. ‘CHERRY’ is an EP that we were deeply involved in making from beginning to end, and so it holds special importance for me. I hope FEMM’s songs can give you even just a little strength. On my first ever solo song, I tried to convey the message and the sound that express my feelings right now. I think it sounds pretty different from other FEMM songs, so please check it out ;)”

FEMM is a mannequin duo best known for their girls’ anthem “Fxxk Boyz Get Money” which earned them a big fanbase in Europe and the world. Their 1st album “Femm-Isation” charted on Billboard Chart’s “World Albums” in the US, as well as winning a nomination for HMV’s “Best Indies Album” across England.
They dropped a surprise release of “Tokyo Ex Machina” featuring world renowned creators from Europe to Asia such as Jenna Andrews who has worked on BTS’s “Butter”, One Direction, John Ryan who has worked with Maroon 5 and Rita Ora as well as.Danny L Harle who has worked with Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama. “We Got Each Other” from the album was produced by Kool Kojak known for his work with Doja Cat and more. The agents (FEMM’s fans) around the world were in shock as FEMM revealed their first ever smile (though it was in their dream) in the music video released together with the album.
This groovy R&B song “Outta The Clouds” is the 2nd music video from the album which is available across all digital music streaming platforms. This song was produced by Woo Min Lee who has worked with TWICE, ITZY and NiziU. The music video was directed by Masashi Muto, a Japanese filmmaker who is tag teaming with FEMM for the first time. FEMM were dressed in a pop and girl-like visuals in "We Got Each Other”, while in this video, they took a different approach with beauty oriented looks on their facial expressions and hair makeups.
The video portrays FEMM’s strong message of how they believe that once this Covid 19 pandemic and the struggles with invisible walls of acrylic shields and vinyl curtains are gone, the fog will clear and there will be a brighter sight before us. FEMM Announce Surprise New Album, ‘Tokyo Ex Machina’! Video for ’90s Revival Pop-Punk Track ‘We Got Each Other’ As Well!

Tokyo Girls Anthem Jacket Cover

Musical mannequin duo FEMM are famed for their girls’ anthem “Fxxk Boyz Get Money”, which quickly earned them a fan base in the United States, Europe and the rest of the world. Their debut album Femm-Isation reached the Top 10 of the Billboard World Albums chart in the US, and was picked as a Best Indie Album at HMV stores across the UK.

Their most recent album Tokyo Girls Anthem was released just last month, in December 2021, packed with a wide variety of rap tracks made in collaboration with globally active hip-hop producers such as Boys Noize and Star Boy. Now, FEMM have made the surprise announcement that their third album, Tokyo Ex Machina, has been released today, Friday, January 21 across all digital music streaming platforms. The music video for new song “We Got Each Other” was also released this past week.

The new album also features a selection of star collaborators from Europe, the US and Asia: Jenna Andrews, who worked on the smash BTS song “Butter”; John Ryan, who has worked on many songs with One Direction as well as Maroon 5 and Rita Ora; Doja Cat collaborator Kool Kojak; Danny L Harle, who is a cohort of Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama; and Woo Min Lee, who has worked on several songs for TWICE.

The jacket photo is by Liam Wong, who has been featured on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list and who previously created the music video and jacket image for FEMM’s single ‘Tic Toc’. The photo, titled ‘Neo Tokyo’, recalls the classic cyberpunk vibes of AKIRA and Blade Runner and will appeal to fans of concept artist Syd Mead.

The opening track of the album, We Got Each Other, incorporates the sound of the 1990s punk revival that has been hugely popular this past year in the United States and Europe. The sweet and sour lyrics in which the two singers comfort one another over broken hearts deliver an emotional message, reminiscent of the girls’ rock movement that was prevalent in the ’90s and ’00s.

Directed by Julie Giesen, the video dares to be girly, and starts with the two members of FEMM touching down in Tokyo’s Shibuya district. As the mannequins are brushed by a wave of animated magic, their appearance transforms into something we have never seen from FEMM before. As they visit an arcade and a bowling alley, the members – who are known for their icy demeanor – actually crack a smile! Are they dreaming, or have we been transported to a world of fantasy?

In the near future, music videos for new album cuts “Outta The Clouds” and “Crystal Ball” will follow, as well as a video for “Crawl Away”, the song that reunites FEMM with their “Fxxk Boyz Get Money” producer Pat Lukens, and a video for popular track “Falling For A Lullaby”. Look out for each new announcement as it comes.

FEMM have attracted attention from many global media, and their videos have found great acclaim, with Venezuelan musician Arca praising the twisted avatars in a previous video made with Aphex Twin visual collaborator Weirdcore. As the world contends with the ongoing pandemic, FEMM are broadcasting their own 21st-century Japonisme to the globe.
