“Blueberry” by Daichi Yamamoto

Missing that western R&B/ Rap music I get during my morning work, in-d was the initial step to Daichi Yamamoto. He had a lot of impressive tracks off of his latest EP Elephant in My Room but “Blueberry” scratched that itch that I needed for western style. It’s beautiful yet haunting composition is something that needs to be heard. Yamamoto’s rap skill is nothing to sneeze at and goes above Music Corner alum Sorane’s skill and I put him high in that regard in the Japanese music industry.  Yamamoto left a great first impression on his style and cadence from this track and I can’t wait to dive into the rest of his discography.

“Free” by Polkadot Stingray

While released back in July, I didn’t get a chance to listen to it during our whole ordeal with Kenshi, however, I had high expectations for this song due to their previous track “Stinging Spica” already being in the race for song of the year. While not reaching the top parse, it reaches that bite size goodness a solid pop-rock band needs to be. That one simple act will always make me go back to tracks like this all too often.

“Your Love” by SIRUP

Continuing from my R&B/ Hip-Hop trance that I was put into this month, SIRUP was an artist that I kept going back to. From my rotation last month, “Your Love” was always that second pick from his discography. The craft and skill SIRUP has shown in this song was just absolutely fantastic and shows that he’s enjoying every bit of it. From the high energy and simplistic composition to going above and beyond with his vocal range, it’s a track that needs to be heard.

“Blue” by LUCKY TAPES feat. Kojikoji

I was absolutely ecstatic about this collaboration as I’ve been high on LUCKY TAPES for years since starting the podcast. Kojikoji was an up-and-coming vocalist that I’ve been keeping my eye on since the abundant of collaborations that she as already done with similar artists. One of the things that I just love about this track is that the vocalist Kai doesn’t do anything dance while the track keeps the composition simple and not overbearing. From that one simple act, it puts both his and Kojikoji’s vocals into the forefront and entices you to keep listening. The track had gone above and beyond my expectations and was the main reason I did a Music Corner about them in the first place.

“Fireworks” by Daoko and Kenshi Yonezu

Due to our podcast doing an Artist Spotlight about Yonezu last month, one of his tracks was going to bleed over into my heavy rotation. “Fireworks” was one of the first songs I honestly fell in love with from Yonezu that I didn’t know it was from him originally. Its beautiful composition brings out the best of both vocalists. While the solo versions of the song were just ok, the original duet version is absolutely fantastic and in my opinion the best work that both Daoko and Yonezu have done.

Review: Polkadot Stingray JET

Taking off higher and higher!

“JET” Cover Art

“JET” Cover Art

Polkadot Stingray soared sky high with their mini-album Shinseiki EP and wanted to continue the momentum with the band’s first digital-only release “JET”. Were they able to land on the runway as planned or did they stumble on the way over?

“JET” was originally released on March 29, 2020 across all digital music streaming platforms and announced during the band’s YouTube livestream the day prior. This was Polkadot Stingray’s first digital track of 2020 and their latest release since their Shinseiki EP in January. This new number was used in collaboration with popular Australia based airline company Jetstar, hence its name. It was written by lead singer Shizuku with the rest of the band composing the track.

“JET” possesses a more whimsical and light composition compared to the alternative rock heavy tone the band is known for. This is in part due to their guest keyboardist MARI of the band Gesu no Kiwami Otome, who Polkadot Stingray asked for personally. Her presence is an impressionable one as her arrangement is crafted with a sense of wonderment in mind, which ends up making this track, unlike anything the band has made before. This wonderment paired with lead guitarist Harushi’s expertise leads to a delightfully breezy, lighthearted composition. Shizuku’s vocal style is also a first: it expresses a sort of childlike delight as she leads up to the chorus which features that give and take some pop-rock artists like to use to entice listeners. This is the next evolution, so to speak, of the band tackling this type of genre since their track “A Stinging Spica” months prior.

This lightheartedness is doubled in the track’s music video which is directed by Takuya Kurahashi from the music production team Quark Tokyo, and its scenario was brought to life by Shizuku herself. The video features Shizuku going through a day in her life and cutely doing a small dance number throughout the song’s chorus. Choreographed by dancer GENTA, this quirky take goes against Shizuku’s “girl with a gutter” persona she has constructed throughout the years. The final lead-up to the track’s end displays the band performing in an airport hangar and prominently features a Jetstar airplane behind them promising “All day, everyday low fares.”

“JET” boasted that not only are they able to continue their momentum from 2019, but they will also keep raising the bar higher and higher with each release. Currently, this track is available across all streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music. The music video is also available via the group’s official YouTube channel which you can check out below.

Polkadot Stingray Jets Off in Latest Music Video!

IMG_0436.jpeg

To celebrate the release of their brand new track “JET”, Music Corner alum Polkadot Stingray also dropped the music video for said track on their official YouTube channel. Directed beautifully by Tatsuya Kurahashi of the design team Quark tokyo, the video focuses on lead vocalist Shizuku as she goes through everyday life. The track is set as a collaboration song with Australia based airline Jetstar. Polkadot Stingray flips the script once again by showing a more bubbly upbeat composition that will have fans up and dancing. They brought on keyboardist MARI of the band Gesu no Kiwamiotome to help bring this energetic composition to life.

“JET” is currently available on all digital streaming platforms and is the latest release by the group since their 新世紀 (Shinseiki) mini-album back in January. Check out the music video in question below!
